The discussion focuses on wave motions that are non-dispersive in the linear approximation, in which case amplitude dispersion and self-refraction are the primary mechanisms for nonlinear distortion. Part I covers planar waves and the basic method. In Part II the results for a variety of systems are presented, and some types of further research are suggested.
