Recent Developments for the Nonlinear Distortion of Non-Dispersive Acoustic Waves

Part I: Planar Waves and the Basic Method

J.H. Ginsberg

School of Mechanical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907

This two-part paper describes a perturba tion procedure for investigating finite amplitude acoustic waves that depend on more than one spatial coordinate. The discussion focuses on wave motions that are non-dispersive in the linear approximation, in which case amplitude dispersion and self-refraction are the primary mechanisms for nonlinear distortion. Part I covers planar waves and the basic method. In Part II the results for a variety of systems are presented, and some types of further research are suggested.
